Agent Dana Scully's initial assignment to the X-files was to debunk them (and Fox Mulder) providing quantitative scientific proof that the X-files was an unnecessary expenditure of FBI resources and that the whole operation could be closed down. Scully has always found faith through scientific fact and although a cast iron sceptic she believes Mulders theories but not as paranormal activity but simply so far science hasn't found an answer, after all, "Nothing happens in contradiction to science, only what we know of it." |
| Scully joined the FBI after becoming a medical doctor and specialising in forensics. Before joining the X-files she spent two years teaching at the FBI training academy where she was spotted as being the ideal person to work alongside Mulder and find solid evidence to debunk his work. This has not been the case though, because all the theories that she has come up with, so far, have not been fully substantiated with scientific evidence. Now Scully is acting in direct opposition to her original assignment and is striving to find the factual evidence that Mulder needs to validate and prove his theories are correct and now Mulder needs Scully to keep him a hole person and to hold him back, protecting him both from himself and from the high ranking FBI officials that want to close him down. |

| Scully could probably of had a great career with the FBI and could have worked her way up the chain of command but instead she has stuck with Mulder working on the X-files. She has lost some of the respect that she once had from her superiors, colleges, friends and even her family (her brother in particular). Scully has not let this affect her relationship with Mulder and still jeopardises he professional integrity and career to help try and back up his work with quantitative, substantiated evidence that her superiors cannot disrepute. |
